Federal lawsuit filed against Iowa’s ban of mask mandate
Iowa City, Iowa – A group of parents of handicapped kids has filed a federal lawsuit to overturn Iowa’s law preventing schools from requiring masks, claiming it puts their children’s health at risk and limits equal access to education.
The American Civil Liberties Union and disability rights organizations are supporting the case.
It adds to the legal pressures that the state is experiencing as the number of virus cases and hospitalizations in Iowa reached new highs since last winter.
At a press conference on Thursday, Gov. Kim Reynolds defended the law, saying it gives parents the option of whether or not their children should wear masks.
Those who are unsafe in classes, she says, can enroll in online-only programs.
