Cedar Rapids community shows interest for derecho recovery
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Hundreds of cars lined up in Cedar Rapids more than a year after the derecho to get a free tree.
This morning, Trees Forever teamed up with the Arbor Day Foundation and State Farm to plant 200 trees at Bever Park. The derecho on August 10, 2020, destroyed an estimated 690,000 trees in Cedar Rapids. The organizers hope that the long line of cars reflects the effort being made to replant the trees.
“The line of cars are stretching all the way through the park, and all the way through Bever Avenue, so we’re excited about this,” said Jim Humphreys, an agent with State Farm.
The Arbor Day Foundation has received a $1 million grant from State Farm to cover the cost of the free trees distributed today.
Trees were available on a first come, first served basis while supplies lasted.
