Iowa will spend $9.2 million to increase nursing staff
Des Moines, Iowa – Iowa plans to spend $9.2 million to increase healthcare staffing at overburdened hospitals as a result of the latest COVID-19 increase.
About 100 nurses and respiratory therapists from around the country arrived in Iowa and are currently placed in hospitals in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Mason City, Iowa City, Waterloo, Dubuque, Council Bluffs, Sioux City, and Ames.
For the following six weeks, the state will pay nearly $15,000 per nurse.
The amount is significant because the state will pay a Kansas staffing company $220 per regular hour for each supplemental nurse and $330 for each of the extra hours that the nurses are expected to work each week.
