Iowa City, Iowa – The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the internet is growing; from social media to resume updates, the number of people utilizing AI technology is rising.

A new initiative being introduced by the University of Iowa aims to educate faculty and staff on AI in the future. The three-level curriculum HawkAI is designed to get humans ready for the AI of the future.

The University of Iowa aims to educate people as AI becomes more prevalent on campus so they will be ready for the inevitable global adoption of this technology.

Dr. Milan Sonka, director of HawkAI and professor at the University of Iowa College of Engineering, stated, “It was able to catch up very quickly, much faster than almost anything else in electronics or modern computing.”

Since the 1990s, Sonka has been involved with this technology. He is in charge of HawkAI.

“It is crucial to educate our staff, faculty, and students so that we are all aware of the potential of artificial intelligence,” Sonka stated. “In addition to what we should exercise caution with.”

He claims that although individuals must exercise caution and understand when and how to employ AI, it has a place in academia and can be beneficial for educators and students. AI isn’t infallible for scholars and pupils. Sonka claims that after utilizing someone else’s work, AI can inadvertently acquire a bias.

Sonka added, “It will never say to you, ‘I don’t know.'” “There are usually some bad things that go along with all the good things.”

He cautions that individuals should exercise caution when using generative AI to make visuals, as it might be misleading.

“We must maintain our common sense,” Sonka stated. It’s probably not true if something looks too good to be true, don’t you think? In AI, it is still relevant.

Staff and students can use HawkAI for free. One of three courses, the first is meant for beginners and doesn’t require any prior computer or technology-related expertise. For individuals who wish to learn more, or even how to develop AI technology, there are two and three courses available.
