Arrest made after driver leads police on chase across Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — The Cedar Rapids Police Department released new information about the suspect and the vehicle used during a police chase in the early hours of Tuesday, March 23rd.

The chase began at 4:00 a.m., in the 600 block of 5th Street Southeast. that’s when a police officer on duty saw a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado without a license plate.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped away at a fast speed.

According to Cedar Rapids Police Department, the pursuit continued eastbound on 12th Avenue SE traveling at approximately 67 miles per hour and turned onto C Street SW.

The suspect ran several stop signs in the Czech Village area and then went south onto Bowling Street SW. Speeds on Bowling Street reach 79 miles per hour.

The suspect traveled to Kirkwood Court SW and then turned around and went north onto Kirkwood Boulevard SW, west on Miller Avenue to J Street, north on J Street to Hawkeye Downs Road, west on Hawkeye Downs Road to 6th Street SW and then westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 30 to Edgewood Road.

The suspect continued north on Edgewood Road to 16th Avenue SW, and eventually to Stoney Point Road.

The suspect reached speeds of 85 mph in a 45 mph zone at E Avenue NW, where the suspect went eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 100.

The suspect hit stop sticks that other officers had deployed near Highway 100 and US Interstate 380, but continued with a front tire that was flat south onto Council Street from Highway 100 and then west on 42nd Street NE.

The suspect then went south on Center Point Road running through stop signs. He traveled throughout southeast Cedar Rapids and eventually back onto 1st Avenue where he went west on 1st Avenue.

The suspect then went north onto 15th Street NW, eastbound on B Avenue NW, north on 8th Street NW, east on E Avenue NW, and then north on Ellis Boulevard NW.

The suspect then went west on F Avenue NW, pulled the vehicle off the side of the road in the 1200 block of F Avenue NW and attempted to flee on foot running through several yards before being apprehended in the 500 block of 13th Street NW.

Police confirmed 36-year-old Adam J. Miller was arrested for multiple charges:

1. Theft-1st Degree Felony Eluding
2. Driving While Barred
3. Reckless Driving
4. Driving Wrong Way of 2-Way Highway
5. Speed, Improper Use of Lanes
6. Interference with Official Acts
7. Speeding, Improper Turn at Intersection
8. Disobedience to Traffic Control Device
9. No License Plates

The suspect was determined to have been driving a stolen vehicle that was reported stolen on March 6.

The vehicle was stolen from an northwest side residence.

The vehicle had been left unlocked with the keys inside the vehicle.

The pursuit lasted just over 30 minutes.

No injuries were reported.

A police supervisor was in constant contact with officers involved in the pursuit.

There was minimal other traffic during the time of the pursuit.
