Des Moines, Iowa – According to a GasBuddy study of 2,036 stations in the state, the average price of gasoline in Iowa has dropped by 4.2 cents per gallon over the last week, to $2.74 per gallon.

Prices in Iowa are still 8.7 cents lower than they were a month ago, but 6.2 cents higher than they were a month ago, notwithstanding this recent decline.

Additionally, the average price of gasoline has decreased nationwide, down 3.0 cents per gallon over the past week to an average of $2.98. According to GasBuddy data collected from more than 150,000 gas stations throughout the country, this is a drop of 4.9 cents from a month ago and 11.8 cents from a year ago.

The average price of diesel nationwide is at $3.473 per gallon, down 0.5 cents over the past week.

“As we close out 2024, the national average has reversed course, declining after a few weeks of rising gas prices,” stated Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

According to De Haan, 2024 will mark the second year in a row that the national average has declined. He mentioned that GasBuddy would publish the 2025 Fuel Price Outlook, which will give drivers a better idea of what to anticipate in the upcoming year.
