Dubuque activists applaud new gun control legislation

Dubuque, Iowa – ”We want people to be encouraged with the progress we’re making.” said Tom Moothart, president of the Dubuque Coalition for Nonviolence.

Dubuque activists held a rally in honor of recent rulings they believe would increase local gun safety. The demonstration was organized by Moms Demand Action and the Dubuque Coalition for Nonviolence.

According to the groups, the Dubuque school board has opted not to permit staff members and teachers to carry weapons on school property.

In April, Governor Reynolds signed legislation enabling districts to choose to permit that.

The organizations claim that a recent ruling by the Supreme Court has also given them hope. It prohibits the ownership of firearms by those who are covered by restraining orders pertaining to domestic abuse.

“There’s encouraging things going on, and we like to keep people positive and engaged, rather than giving up. We will never give up, never give in,” Moothart said.

The Dubuque Coalition for Nonviolence claims that while it advocates for additional reforms, its main goal is not the confiscation of firearms but rather their appropriate use and storage.
