During the season, sweet corn returns
Dubuque, Iowa – For the first time, sweet corn was available for purchase at the Dubuque Farmers’ Market on Saturday. Sweet corn has returned.
“It’s like the corn version of ice cream,” Alek Eglinton said.
The yellow delight was the main draw for many visitors to the Farmers’ Market, including Sydney Hamilton, a Wisconsin native. There’s just one proper way to eat sweet corn, according to her.
“Right off the cob. There’s no other way. You got to have the full experience,” Hamilton said.
Some, like Noah Geerts, even traveled from Nebraska specifically for the corn.
“The kernels, kind of explode in the mouth as you’re chewing down on it,” Geerts said.
Like Gary Knight, a lot of farmers put up their sales in addition to participating in farmers’ markets. Knight stated that he attempts to apprehend individuals on route to shop at Eastern Iowa Hy-Vee stores.
According to Knight, sweet corn can be plucked from the plant and eaten right away.
“You don’t need to cook it, you don’t need to butter it or salt it,” Knight said.
