Kirkwood Community College buys 80 acres close to its campus in Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – An effort is being made by Kirkwood Community College to extend its agriculture space by purchasing an additional 80 acres of property. This move is being made in order to assist in the growth of one of the school’s most popular programs.
The new acreage is located a little more than two miles away from the main Kirkwood campus. It is directly across the street from the Airport National Golf Course, which is located along Wright Brothers Boulevard.
Troy McQuillen, who is the Vice President of Facilities and Public Safety at Kirkwood, stated that “this is just a great, beautiful plot to add to our infrastructure and to add to our student success.” “We are going to care for this property in an extremely responsible manner.”
In addition to the fact that there are more than 400 students enrolled in the agriculture program at Kirkwood, students will now have access to up to 480 acres of property on which they can further their education. The objective is to provide agricultural students with direct, year-round exposure.
McQuillen stated that the kids would be closely involved with each and every aspect of the project.
At their meeting the previous week, the Board of Trustees gave their approval for the acquisition of $1,356,000. In order to assist in the expansion of its agriculture program, the school has been working for several months to locate a perfect location; nevertheless, it has been difficult to find the appropriate location.
McQuillen stated that the situation is competitive and that there are a number of excellent local farmers in the vicinity of these locations who are also seeking for land.
There will be a direct connection between this new site and the area that the school is now utilizing.
“This was the ideal property for us to be able to simply remove the fence rows and continue farming all the way across the path,” said McQuillen. “We were able to expand our operations completely.”
On the 15th of November, it is anticipated that the purchase will be completed.
