Potential modifications to city regulations might facilitate the parking and storage of trailers and RVs in Washington
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Washington residents may soon find it simpler to park trailers, RVs, and other large, functioning vehicles.
Members of the City Council are scheduled to approve the proposed ordinance, which would permit the parking of these vehicles in people’s yards, provided that the owner parks them on an all-weather surface, such as cement or gravel.
However, a couple from the area claims that these modifications would ruin Washington’s appearance.
“They’re allowing what we call ‘clutter creep’ for one or two properties at a time. They’re kind of being jumped up… it looks bad for the whole city.” said Bob Minick. He’s lived in Washington with his wife, Maryann, for 53 years.
There are other trailers in the neighborhood where they live, and there are currently two on the lot next door. They fear that the amended ordinances won’t restrict the quantity of trailers that individuals may place on their lands.
“When people start finding out that all they have to do is pour some gravel and they can park anything they want, anywhere they want for as long as they want, I think we could have a real problem.” said Maryann.
However, according to City Councilman Pat Morgan, these adjustments will help prevent eyesores from entering residential areas.
“We’re trying to avoid a nuisance. We’re trying to avoid the fact of – and it does happen in some areas – somebody just pulls in the front yard…What we’re really trying to do is keep things presentable for all residents within the city.” he said.
The ordinance has been approved on its first reading by the council. This Tuesday night is the second vote.
However, Morgan advises anyone with complaints to address them with the council directly.
“By all means, if they would like to show up and speak during that time and stress their concerns, we’re more than happy to hear those as then.” he said.
