Cedar Rapids, Iowa – In order to help customers get home safely after spending the night celebrating Independence Day, Uber is providing a $10 discount.

Together with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, this is an endeavor. It stated that one of the riskiest times to drive is around the Fourth of July holiday. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau reports that 32 people have died on Iowan roads over the holiday. Alcohol was a factor in half of them.

“I had a couple of drinks, and I decided not to drive and get behind the wheel,” said Eric Jones of Cedar Rapids.

There were a lot of people out celebrating the occasion, including Jones. Before gathering the family to watch fireworks, he passed the afternoon with pals, making sure to ride sober and safely.

“You have to think about everyone else on the road too, you know,” said Jones.

Using the voucher wasn’t difficult either. The voucher is added after you scan the QR code. It was minutes later that Margeret Lewis and her husband Rob arrived. Lewis claimed that she only drives for a few hours each day, but that throughout the afternoon, people were asking for trips to and from pubs.

“I picked up a couple of people from Big Grove already, I’ve dropped off people at Big Grove,” she said.

She was unaware of the voucher until we informed her about it, and she is in favor of the incentive to increase the likelihood that individuals won’t drive while intoxicated.

“I had several people that feel more safe taking us than having to drive their own car,” said Lewis.

After reaching her sales target by three in the afternoon, she is not attracting the nighttime throngs. Jones has a plan to get home safely after the fireworks, which may involve taking advantage of a ride-sharing service.

“I’d use it if I needed to, but I have my own designated driver,” said Jones.

The ride certificates are valid through Sunday, July 7th.
