Dubuque, Iowa – After an eastern Iowa skatepark updates its facilities, the city of Dubuque may host national action sports contests.

$150,000 will be invested in Olliewood Action Sports’ indoor skatepark. With funding from the Dubuque Racing Association totaling $45,000, the expansion project will replace outdated machinery and incorporate fresh elements, such as a viewing area.

“Aspects of our set up are five, six years old and they need to be updated,” said Olliewood Action Sports Executive Director Jason Henkel. “As the youth around the area has increased in skill level and increased in numbers, our facility has not grown.”

The facility will be able to host national contests for skating, BMX, mountain biking, and scooters after the upgrades, which are currently being completed, are completed.

“It’s a multi-million-dollar industry that we don’t have a home for here in Dubuque,” Henkel explained. “We have great local skate parks that cater to our local citizens, but when you can bring the outside-our-region elements in, then our local kids get to see what’s possible.”

At the moment, the skatepark is divided into two distinct zones, one for novice skaters and another for more experienced skaters. The proposal proposed by Olliewood will connect the places and include further extreme elements.

This fall, according to Henkel’s estimation, the expansion project will be completed.
