The pub in Cedar Rapids was closed for November after a second violation involving alcohol
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – After receiving a second citation in as many years for supplying alcohol to a juvenile, Sag Wagon, a well-known tavern in Cedar Rapids, will be closed through November.
The company accepted the 30-day liquor license suspension and acknowledged the infraction on Facebook, where it also announced the temporary shutdown. The restaurant and bar, which is popular with both locals and bikers along the Cedar Valley Nature Trail, will reopen on December 1.
Sag Wagon is also subject to a $1,500 civil penalty under Iowa Code 123.47, which imposes increasing fines for repeated infractions involving serving minors, in addition to the suspension.
Iowa has severe administrative penalties for several kinds of infractions:
1. A first offense within two years can result in either a $500 civil fine or a 14-day license suspension.
2. A second violation within two years, like Sag Wagon’s, incurs a 30-day suspension and a $1,500 fine.
3. A third violation in that period would lead to a 60-day suspension.
4. A fourth within three years could result in a permanent revocation of the liquor license.
“We acknowledge our mistake and accept the penalty of a 30-day closure,” Sag Wagon’s post read. “Our staff is committed to doing better going forward.”
