$10K is approved by the Cedar Rapids City Council for a new summer meal spot
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – During the meeting that took place on Tuesday evening, the Cedar Rapids City Council gave their approval to allocate $10,000 in funds for a new summer meals site.
In response to the closure of the Hy-Vee on 1st Avenue, which has resulted in the creation of a “food desert” in a high-needs area of Cedar Rapids, the Johnson STEAM Academy has established a meal site.
To assist the school district in expanding the program, the Linn County Supervisors have already approved a funding amount of $10,000.
The program is a result of a partnership between the school system and Representative Sami Scheetz. All ages, including adults, are welcome to participate. Unlike other district meal locations, which are solely accessible to children, this one is open to adults as well.
Monday through Friday, the Johnson STEAM Academy, which can be found at 355 18th Street Southeast in Cedar Rapids, serves breakfast from 8:00 to 9:00 in the morning and lunch from 11:00 to 12:30 in the afternoon.
The duration of the program is till the 16th of August.
