Following a vote of no confidence, the North Liberty Police Chief resumes his position with a commitment to transforming the culture

North Liberty, Iowa – Following an inquiry that revealed no legal violations or intentional behavior, Diane Venega is taking back her position as chief of police for North Liberty.

The North Liberty Police Department Officers’ Union and Sergeants Union jointly submitted a letter in March outlining several issues they claimed raised questions about Venega’s leadership, which prompted the investigation.

Officers and sergeants in the police department unanimously approved a vote of no confidence in Venega, according to city officials, who then put him on paid administrative leave while they carried out their own independent inquiry.

Although the three-month inquiry did not uncover any evidence of malicious behavior or a failure to safeguard officers on the part of Chief Venega, it did identify a critical need to enhance communication and reestablish confidence within the department.

Chief Venega stated she is dedicated to implementing those changes as she takes back her position.

“I am committed to improving the culture within our police department to fulfill the mission of our department, which includes service and commitment to our community, and where public safety should always be the first priority,” Venenga said in a press release Thursday. “I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to working with our officers to move the department forward in a positive direction.”

With immediate effect, Venega has assumed the position of police head once again.
