Cedar Rapids man sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to fatally shooting a teenager
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – As part of a plea deal, a 20-year-old Cedar Rapids man was sentenced to probation for the shooting death of an 18-year-old during the course of an unsuccessful robbery attempt.
According to court documents, 20-year-old Kyler Carson entered a guilty plea on Tuesday to several counts of assault, and the judge sentenced him to three years of probation. He must also pay the family of Andrew Gaston $150,000 in restitution.
Carson was 16-years-old at the time of the commission of the crime. When Andrew and Tyrell Gaston tried to steal marijuana from Carson, Andrew was killed and Tyrell was hurt by gunfire.
Initially, voluntary manslaughter and other counts were brought against Carson.
Tyrell Gaston, 18, was also found guilty of second-degree robbery in this case and received a sentence of three years of probation. However, he was brought back into jail in November after being charged with two counts of attempted murder in a separate case.
