Residents of Iowa City praise honor Ashley Bryan on Sunday in recognition of Black History Month
Iowa City, Iowa – At the Sunday Funday program held at the Iowa City Public Library, residents of Iowa City commemorated Black History Month.
The library is hosting several events to honor some of the most well-known members of African American culture, including that one. They created crafts and artwork on Sunday in honor of Ashley Bryan, an artist. He is renowned for having illustrated several publications, such as:
• Sail Away
• All things bright and beautiful
• Blooming Beneath the Sun
Bryan’s children’s book, Beautiful Blackbird, which talked about embracing your history and finding your inner beauty, served as the inspiration for those crafts.
Henriette Viner, an Iowa City resident, was interviewed by Iowa’s News Now to discuss her motivation for attending the Sunday Funday event in Iowa City.
“We came to look at books and we did the crafts,” said Viner. “It was about Beautiful Black Bird.
Iowa City resident Cara Viner discussed her motivation for taking her family to the Sunday Funday event on Sunday.
“I think Black History Month is really important so that we learn about everyone’s history and equality and justice for all,” said Viner. “And, I want my girls to celebrate diversity and representation.”
In celebration of modern artist Howardena Pindell, the library will have another Sunday Funday program on Sunday, February 25th, if you were unable to attend. The time of that event is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
