DVIP organizes an annual “Shop for Shelter” event
Iowa City, Iowa – Shop for Shelter Saturday is being held for the 27th year by the Domestic Violence Intervention Program in Iowa City. Participants can shop at Hy-Vees or Fareways in Johnson County.
According to DVIP leaders, the yearly event provides outreach and emergency shelter services for a period of six months.
Customers who wish to participate will be given shopping lists by volunteers at the county’s grocery stores.
Everything survivors need to start over, from nonperishable food items like rice and soup to diapers and hair care products, will be on the lists.
No donation is too modest, according to Alta Medea, the DVIP’s head of community engagement.
“Everything matters, don’t they? Therefore, the mere fact that you can have a snack and be provided some food to start that process as you make your way to safety matters when you are in need and have fled a dangerous situation with just the clothes on your back, the speaker stated.
According to Madea, there are typically about 70 people working for the organization at any given time, and this year, they will provide emergency shelter assistance to over 700 people.
