Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Ryan Gusta saw a dog roaming the sidewalk close to the woods on December 18 while he was driving on Edgewood Road in Cedar Rapids.

“I stopped to see how the dog was doing, and right behind me, another car stopped. Brian was simply on the opposite side of the sidewalk when we got out of our cars, so we clearly spotted him right away,” Gusta remarked.

Brian Dyslin had fallen into a ditch and Gusta ran to aid him. Priscilla, his dog, was by her owner’s side.

Gusta was unaware that Dyslin had suffered a stroke four years prior, which left him mute.
We were certain that he was comprehending all we were saying. He was simply finding it difficult to speak openly with us,” Gusta remarked.

Crews informed Dyslin Animal Control that they would take care of his dog while he was at the hospital when an ambulance arrived to assist.

“Brian shut that down right away. I had assured him that I would see to it that his dog got to its destination since I knew he wouldn’t leave until he was certain his dog was safe,” Gusta remarked.

A few days later, Gusta was allowed to contact his family and wanted to get back in touch with Dyslin.

Gusta claimed to have made a lifelong friend and to be motivated by Dyslin’s fortitude and optimism in the face of adversity.

“I’ve already told Brian that we’ll have a party after his surgery. Gusta declared, “We’re going to celebrate by going out to dinner.”
