Miller-Meeks and Bohannan, two congressional candidates, debate in a tight race
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – In an Iowa contest that has been garnering national attention as a real battleground in the broader struggle for control of the House, rivals engaged in discussion Monday night.
Christina Bohannan, a Democrat, is running against Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, the incumbent in the first congressional district.
Though this was a heated debate, there were a few subjects where the candidates truly agreed with one another.
One of the most heated exchanges occurred during the abortion debate. The “Life At Conception Act” was used, just like it was in the District 2 debate between Ashley Hinson and Sarah Corkery.
Miller-Meeks disputed that the measure had anything to do with abortion when Bohannan brought up the fact that she had signed it.
According to Bohannan, “she went further in Congress and supported a “Life at Conception” bill.”
“Pardon me. Miller-Meeks stated that the “Life at Conception” law did not mention abortion.
More than three years ago, Miller-Meeks was a co-sponsor of the “Life at Conception Act.” Without exemption, it would effectively outlaw abortion. Congress did not act on this bill after it was presented in the U.S. House in 2021.
Bohannan expressed her desire for Iowa to return to its previous state. A moderator questioned whether that referred to Iowa’s earlier legislation that forbade abortions beyond 20 weeks. “Sure,” Bohannan answered.
Immigration was another topic on which the candidates disagreed.
“I think the Trump-era policies that helped keep down the amount of illegal drugs, illegal fentanyl, and the number of illegal immigrants crossing our border were border-control measures,” Miller-Meeks said.
“Yes, I am in favor of border security. “The border needs to be secured,” Bohannan stated. That, in my opinion, is crucial. I have repeatedly criticized the Biden Administration. I’m doing it now, just like I did in 2022, and I’ve called on President Biden to take action on the border.
