Moderna vaccines arrive at central Iowa hospitals
Metro hospitals on Tuesday received their first shipments of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.
MercyOne Des Moines shared footage of its shipment as employees unpacked it.
Moderna’s vaccine is easier to store because, unlike the Pfizer vaccine, it does not need to be frozen at such low temperatures.
MercyOne Medical Director of Infection Prevention Dr. Ravi Vemuri said the latest vaccine shipment came just in time.
“We got about 875 doses of the Pfizer one in the initial go around, and we’re finishing up the last few doses today,” Vemuri said. “So, it’s coming just in time and hopefully we can begin vaccinating with the Moderna supply as early as tomorrow.”
Vemuri said MercyOne expects to receive nearly 1,500 doses of the Moderna vaccine, almost twice as many doses as the Pfizer vaccine.
UnityPoint Health and Broadlawns also received Moderna vaccine shipments.
