Officer on a Rooftop – fundraising for Special Olympics
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Customers at Dunkin’ Donuts may have had an interesting experience when grabbing their morning coffee because police officers from all around the state were using the cafe’s roof to collect donations.
For Special Olympics Iowa, it’s the ninth annual Cop on a Rooftop fundraiser. By noon, they want to have raised as much as $40,000 to support Special Olympics competitors and pay for activities.
“I think it’s a great partnership, we do it for a good cause a couple times a year,” Cedar Rapids Police Department Officer Josh Carter stated. “People’s faces light up with smiles.”
Organizers of Special Olympics Iowa claim it’s a fantastic chance to raise awareness of their organization.
According to Syndey Sloan, director of competitions for Special Olympics Iowa, “every dollar raised, every person that meets a new athlete or sees the law enforcement raises a little more awareness for Special Olympics.” “We immediately reinvest that money into the competitions we host throughout the year.”
Donations over $10 are matched with a free coffee, and every donor will receive a complimentary donut.
Up to noon, police will be stationed at 22 Dunkin’ Donuts locations around Iowa.
