A Pleasant Hill man was charged with attempted murder after severely beating and throwing a reclining chair on top of his roommate, according to police.
At 4:26 p.m. Saturday Dezrien Vance, 30, was found covered in blood after Pleasant Hill police officers responded to calls about a fight in an apartment in the 500 block of Pleasant Hill Boulevard. Vance admitted to fighting with his roommate, then let officers in the apartment.
The victim was found on the floor face down, unconscious, unresponsive and struggling to breathe, according to a criminal complaint. Their head was laying in a large pool of blood, according to police.
Vance told police he became angry after the victim, his roommate, slapped him twice in the face and “became aggressive toward the defendant.” Vance threw the victim to the ground and kicked the victim twice in the head and once in the upper body, according to the complaint. He also hit the victim with a vacuum cleaner so hard it broke the vacuum and hit the victim with a frying pan so hard it dented the pan, according to the complaint.
While the victim lay on the floor semi-conscious, Vance threw a reclining chair on top of the victim, according to the complaint.
The victim was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center with critical life-threatening injuries. Emergency room physicians determined the victim had a collapsed right lung, broken right orbital and broken right cheekbones and neck and spinal injuries.
Later, the victim was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Vance was charged with attempted murder and willful injury causing serious injury. He was being held Sunday at the Polk County Jail on a $50,000 bond. An attorney for Vance was not yet listed. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 3.
