Cedar Rapids, Iowa – For Iowa’s Democratic leaders, President Biden’s decision to withdraw from consideration for reelection raises a number of questions. The most important question is: will they back Kamala Harris, the vice president?

As of right now, at least one Iowa Democratic leader is avoiding firm pledges.

President Biden, who withdrew from the campaign, has backed Harris. Rita Hart, the chair of the Iowa Democratic Party, was asked on Sunday at a press conference whether Iowa delegates ought should back Harris at the DNC in lieu of President Biden. She was also asked what she would like the delegates from Iowa to hear.

She responded by saying that she’s leaving all options open at the moment.

“The delegates recognize that this is going to be their decision, their process, but I absolutely think that Iowa Democrats can rally around Kamala Harris as our nominee, but we’re very early in this process. So, we will see what happens as the hours and days go by going forward,” said Hart.

Hart described this as “uncharted territory,” stating that procedural issues contribute to some of the uncertainty.

As of right moment, all DNC delegates are “free agents,” able to cast their votes for any candidate.

There are those within the party who support an open nominating procedure wherein several candidates may submit their candidacies.
