St. Luke’s Hospital at UnityPoint opens a new area

Cedar Rapids, Iowa – As part of a $25 million initiative to make operations faster and more effective, UnityPoint Health St. Luke’s Hospital is introducing a new department. The Vascular and Interventional Radiology Lab has recently been enlarged on the Nassif Pavilion’s third level.

One of the largest features in the extended section is the new Radiology Labs. One of these labs is new to Iowa being home to both a CT and Fluoroscopy machine. In essence, a fluoroscopy machine is a moving, live X-ray machine.

The radiology labs had to share CT machines with the rest of the hospital previous to the expansion, which meant that CT scan appointments would occasionally be rescheduled to accommodate emergencies.

“We used to only be able to do two CT biopsies a day, but now we can schedule them at any time of day and do up to maybe five or six,” Lia Dickes, manager of vascular and interventional radiology, stated. “I’m really thrilled about the opportunity to see our patients more quickly so we can provide them with answers and treatment more quickly.”

The hospital is also working to solve the issue of speed. In the past, many patients needing radiological or vascular operations would have to go throughout the hospital; today, everything is contained in a single area.

Dickes stated, “They are a cohesive team and we can take care of them from the very beginning to the very end.” Our goal is to give our loved ones the medical treatment we would like them to receive. And I believe that we are truly benefiting our community with this expansion.

On Tuesday, the hospital will have a private ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the launch of this new division.
