Volunteers engaged in Indian Creek cleanup

Cedar Rapids, Iowa – At the annual Indian Creek Clean-Up that took place on Saturday, volunteers got their hands muddy and their shoes wet in order to contribute to the preservation of the environment.

More than forty individuals spent the morning cleaning up sections of the Indian Creek, the Cedar River, and some roadsides where they were located.

It has been stated by the leaders of the nature center that they are able to locate anything from empty coffee cups to a snowman made of plastic.

In her capacity as director of Land Stewardship, Jean Wiedenheft stated that the cleanup has the potential to benefit more than only the areas in and around Cedar Rapids.

By removing that garbage from the ecosystem, we are doing something that is incredibly vital for the species.

And in the end, if it continues to flow downstream, it will eventually reach the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. According to Wiedenheft, “it is important to put a stop to it wherever we can put a stop to it.”

However, Wiedenheft mentioned that they also do monthly bank clean-ups, despite the fact that the clean-up planned for this year is already above capacity.
