Fire crews put out three-alarm fire in downtown Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Firefighters were battling a three-alarm fire at an apartment complex in downtown Cedar Rapids.
Just after midnight, fire firefighters were sent to the Geneva Towers Apartments, which are located in the 300 block of 5th Avenue Southeast.
When firefighters got on the scene, they saw heavy smoke and flames pouring from the ninth floor, which had shortly extended to the tenth. Firefighters used ladder trucks to help them put out the blaze, and they also employed suppression systems throughout the structure.
Officials said they were forced to evacuate the whole building. People who had to leave their homes were provided a temporary shelter at a local church.
Officials have reported that several individuals have been injured, with one critical patient suffering from smoke inhalation and possible heat injury. A number of other residents suffered injuries and were transferred to nearby hospitals.
Multiple units assisted in extinguishing the fire, which was brought under control around 3 a.m.
An investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the fire.
