Newbo City Market plans its growth with grant funds
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – The Newbo City Market in Cedar Rapids is set to receive a substantial grant, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars, to facilitate its expansion.
Over the last few months, Newbo City Market has secured over $2 million in a range of federal and state grants.
The nonprofit announced that the funding will enable it to introduce a grocery store, increase the number of vendors, and anticipates a significant rise in customer traffic.
Alex Cooley is involved in the operations of KC Cakes, a bakery owned by his fiancé located at Newbo City Market.
“Initially, we equipped this area with a fridge, an oven, and a counter,” Cooley remarked.
He began guest vending at the market three years ago. He is among numerous vendors who have begun their journey at the building. Having spent years acquiring the skills to expand their business, Cooley and his fiancé are now gearing up to launch a restaurant and bakery.
“This experience has been incredible; it has truly been worthwhile to be here,” Cooley remarked. As Cooley gears up to advance his business venture, the marketplace where he began is undergoing a significant multi-million dollar expansion.
The NewBo City Market is set to expand with the addition of a grocery store, an event stage, and increased retail space. The market is set to operate daily, anticipating an increase in customer traffic.
“As we expand to seven days a week and enhance our weekly programming, we anticipate an increase of at least 100,000 in the first year,” stated Sarah Blais, senior director of marketing operations at Newbo City Market.
The nonprofit stated that the addition of more attractions and new areas for vendors has the potential to enhance the success of local businesses.
“A small business that starts with a single seed can eventually flourish into the next ‘almost famous’ brand, finding its place on Hyvee shelves throughout the Midwest.” Blais expressed confidence, stating, “That’s the kind of economic development we know is possible.”
Cooley acknowledges that market vendors may experience a slight decline in activity during the construction phase, but he believes the subsequent increase in business will make it all worthwhile.
“I anticipate that when the expansion occurs, we might experience a brief downturn, but once it’s fully operational, I believe the influx of visitors will significantly benefit us,” Cooley stated.
Blais announced that the market will continue to operate throughout the construction period. The work is expected to commence in a few months, with completion anticipated before the close of 2025.
